PLACE

Incredibly beautiful two-story brick pub (next to the RSL), the Albion sits perfectly between Kyneton’s upscale food scene and the hospitality of a pub in a fabulous regional hotel in Victoria.

The excellent lacework of the balcony, the wooden Venetians at street level, the beautiful sand brick exterior invites you to enter.

Small cozy old world front bar on the left to stand on and have one, raised tables and chairs dot the perimeter with standard dining seating in the same area, separated by a large radiator. The internal masonry is clean and perfect. Upstairs for a reception, beer garden at the back, this pub looks good.

And he delivers. The staff are willing, polite and busy but never interfere. As good as anywhere in a pub. Respect for cleanliness (Covid) once again confirms that this pub (as well as its colleagues) takes this responsibility seriously.

No pokies, no TAB (across the road from RSL if that’s what you like), just great service and great hospitality. The food is priced right for the quality, generously served, and the proximity to Melbourne makes Albion a place to consider on your next outings and looking for a few hours away from the city to spend a few bucks.

On a Wednesday afternoon, its popularity is confirmed with the pub turning off the lights.

FOOD DRINK

All the favorites of a great pub menu are on offer, with a clearer edge to be elevated. Salt and pepper squid with tom-yum, mayonnaise, fresh lime and crispy herbs (18) or a homemade dip with Turkish bread (16) start off on the right foot.

You will be familiar with most of the main dishes, but with a generous plate and nice touches, this is a most enjoyable meal. Braised lamb sausage, casserole of root vegetables (28), sits comfortably next to a thick tile of Atlantic salmon, mashed potatoes, broccolini, caper butter (29). A few steaks, curries and vegetarian offerings make up a refined pub menu.

The most popular rieslings – Knights Granite Hills – are 8.4 / glass // 42 / btle. This is a small markup on retail sales. Well done. Very good project Carlton supports the package.

The average prices are;

  • Appetizers – $ 14
  • Main courses – $ 27
  • Desserts – $ 14

Tried was;

  • Crispy Fried BBQ Chicken Wings, $ 17.00. 4 massive bison wings arrive (then split into 8 meaty pieces), with the perfect tip of crisp, Asian-flavored skin and moist flesh underneath. Supported by a creamy coleslaw and dressing, this entree was executed just as well of its type.
  • Fish & Chips with caper and dill mayo, fresh lemon and salad. $ 25.00. TTwo large hake fillets coated with a crispy, almost tempura batter, remained hot, like chips, until the end. Good product.
  • Rib-Eye 300g with beer fries, green salad, mushroom. $ 40.00. MR as ordered, rich piece, easy to cut (no need for a steak knife), with the backing strip excellent in freshness. The mushroom sauce was a treat.

ABSTRACT

For at least 15 years, possibly longer, Kyneton has been one of the neighborhoods in Victoria where one goes for a better standard of regional food and drink.

Kudos to the trendsetters who identified this at the time with both its proximity to Melbourne (around 1 hour) and with central Victoria for produce, which makes it so desirable. Look out for Piper St. and see how many different food and drink are contained in this strip, including the much revered Royal George Hotel.

But there are also a few traditional pubs (as we would know them) and this is where the Albion shines. Great look and feel of a pub inside; supported by smart pub food to have wide appeal.

A great example of a pub in the Victoria area, but quite close to the city.
