A multi-use path has been proposed for the Lac des Vaseaux sector as part of a longer regional network.
The Trail of the Okanagans Society met with representatives from Recreation Sites and Trails BC and the Okanagan-Similkameen Regional District, as well as MPs Roly Russell and Osoyoos Coun. Myers Bennett last week at the Union of BC Municipalities conference.
The topic was the possibility that a 6.5 kilometer section of the existing Kettle Valley Railway bedrock on the west side of Vaseux Lake could be converted to a multi-use trail. This section would provide a key portion of a 270 km multi-use trail envisioned by the Okanagan Trail to connect all communities between Sicamous and Osoyoos.
A 2019 environmental review of the area commissioned by Recreation Sites and Trails BC determined that the existing rail bed adjacent to Vaseux Lake can be used as a multi-use trail as long as the habitat on either side is protected through identified mitigation efforts. in the report. .
Participants committed to working together to determine a way forward to prepare a park plan that will detail construction work, mitigation measures and required consultations with follow-up meetings scheduled for later this fall.
“This is a very exciting and long-awaited development,” said Janice Liebe, President of the Trail of the Okanagans Society. “It has taken a tremendous amount of effort on the part of government and volunteer groups over the past decade to get here. “
